Two computer vision systems, built and deployed in eight weeks

TechHER25, Women in AI Transformation Programme

An eight-week applied AI engineering programme for 50 STEM students at the Faculty of Computing, University of Ibadan, sponsored by IHS. The cohort, all women, built and deployed two computer vision systems on edge AI compute hardware: smart waste sorting with bin monitoring, and automatic licence plate recognition. The Faculty now houses a permanent AI laboratory.

What the cohort built

  • Smart waste sorting with bin monitoring

Built and deployed by the cohort as a computer vision system on edge AI compute hardware.

  • Automatic licence plate recognition

Built and deployed by the cohort as a computer vision system on edge AI compute hardware.

The cohort demonstrated both systems live at the Grand Demo Day at the University of Ibadan. Read the Field of View brochure for the day's programme.

How the programme ran

TechHER25 ran for eight weeks, from April to July 2026. Sessions included two virtual evening classes each week and Saturday in-person lab sessions from 9am to 3pm at the Faculty of Computing, University of Ibadan. The engineering work moved through four stages.

  1. 1The cohort captured and annotated real-world data.
  2. 2The cohort trained computer vision models.
  3. 3The cohort optimised the models for edge deployment.
  4. 4The cohort ran live inference on edge hardware.

How the cohort was selected

Female students enrolled in STEM disciplines at the University of Ibadan's Faculty of Computing and related departments were eligible. Selection rested on a 20-minute timed technical aptitude assessment with four sections: Linux and systems thinking, computer vision aptitude, Python fluency, and motivation and fit.

The assessment tested logical reasoning and technical foundations, and it required no prior experience of computer vision or AI. Candidates who scored 50% or above were shortlisted as TechHER25 Fellows. Participation carried no cost, because the programme was fully sponsored.
